Why Banks Need a Safe Place for Data

Every day, millions of people in India pay bills, send money and check their balance on their phones. Behind each of these small actions, there is a large amount of digital information. Banks must keep this information as safe records, and they must be able to find it quickly. If the records are lost or damaged, even for a short time, people can face serious problems.

For this reason, big financial institutions use special buildings called data centres. Inside a data centre, rows of powerful computers store and process information all day and night. Because these computers never rest, they produce a lot of heat, so cooling systems are needed. Most centres also keep extra power supply, so that the machines keep running when the electricity goes off. Guards and strict entry rules keep unwanted people out.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the country's central bank, has a major data centre at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai.

A New Centre in Odisha

Now the RBI has built a new major facility near Bhubaneswar in Odisha. It is a greenfield project, which means it was built on fresh land instead of inside an old building. The campus is at Info Valley-II in Jatni, Khordha district, and it covers 18.55 acres. Reports put the cost at about Rs 169 to 170 crore. Along with the data centre, the campus has an Enterprise Computing and Cybersecurity Training Institute, where staff can learn how to run and protect such systems.

Why a Backup Matters

The main purpose of the new centre is to work as a backup for the Kharghar centre. Imagine that you are writing an important exam answer and your pen suddenly stops working. A second pen in your bag would save you. A backup centre works in the same way. If the main centre faces a problem, the second one can keep the most important work going. Experts call this idea redundancy: having a spare so that one failure does not stop everything.

A disaster can come in many forms, such as a flood, a fire, a power failure or an earthquake. Cyber attacks are also a threat, because criminals may try to enter computer systems from far away. According to reports, the Odisha site was planned with these risks in mind, and it is located away from places that may face strikes or seismic risk, which means the danger of earthquakes. A secure location, strong buildings and careful rules help protect the systems inside.

Building a Strong System

The word infrastructure means the basic buildings, equipment and services that a system needs to work. Good banking infrastructure has to be reliable, because people must trust that it will work when they need it. It is also essential, because modern life depends on it. To maintain such a system, the RBI needs trained experts who can watch the computers, fix problems and stop attacks. That is why the training institute on the same campus is just as important as the machines.

The foundation stone for the project was laid on 22 March 2023 by the then RBI Governor, Shaktikanta Das. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the new centre on 25 October 2026 during a visit to Odisha.

The Big Idea

When a country's banking system shows strong resilience, it can recover quickly after a shock and keep serving people. A backup centre, a safe location and trained staff all add to that strength. This passage also carries a useful lesson for everyday life: it is wise to keep a spare copy of important things, such as notes, photos and documents.
