A Small Village, A Big Dream

Neha lived in a small village with her parents and her younger brother. Her father was a farmer, and her mother stitched clothes for the neighbours. Neha had one big dream. She wanted to get a government job in the railways, so that she could help her family live a better life.

Every evening, after she finished her household work, Neha sat under a lamp with her books. But she often felt tired and doubted herself. “Other students have coaching classes and expensive books,” she told her mother. “I only have these old notes.”

Her mother smiled and said, “A river is made of small drops, my daughter. Put in a little effort every day, and see what happens.”

The First Setback

Neha made a schedule and followed it. She studied for two hours every day. She gave one hour to maths and reasoning, and one hour to English and general knowledge. On Sundays, she took a short test from old question papers.

Six months later, she appeared for her first exam. She had worked hard, but she missed the cut-off by a few marks. When the result came, Neha cried quietly in her room. This was her first setback, and it hurt a lot.

Her younger brother, Amit, brought her a glass of water. “Didi, you studied every single day,” he said. “That is not failure. That is practice.”

Learning from Mistakes

The next morning, Neha opened her notebook and wrote down her mistakes: slow calculation, weak vocabulary and careless errors in the English section. She did not write, “I am bad at studies.” She wrote, “I need to improve these three things.”

She made small changes. She learned five new English words every day and stuck them on her wall. She solved ten calculation questions before breakfast. Every Saturday, she began to revise old topics. Slowly, her speed started to improve.

Her teacher at the village school, Mr Sharma, noticed the change. He lent her some useful books and encouraged her to keep going. “Do not compare your first step with someone else's tenth step,” he told her.

The Test of Patience

The next year was not easy. Sometimes the electricity went off, and she studied by the light of a small lamp. Sometimes her friends invited her to a fair, and she had to say no. There were days when she felt like giving up.

On such days, Neha looked at the chart on her wall, where she marked every day she had studied. The chart was full of ticks. “Look at how far I have come,” she thought. That chart gave her the determination to continue. She learned that motivation comes and goes, but a consistent habit stays. Discipline, not luck, became her best friend.

One evening, her cousin Pooja visited her. “You are wasting your time,” Pooja said. “Many people try and fail.” Neha listened quietly and then replied, “Maybe I will fail again. But if I stop today, I will never know.” Pooja had no answer.

The Result

After one year, Neha appeared for the exam again. This time, she felt confident because she knew she had prepared properly. When the result was declared, she checked it three times before she believed it. Her name was on the list!

Her mother hugged her and wiped her tears. Her father, who rarely showed his feelings, quietly distributed sweets to the neighbours. Amit shouted, “My sister did it!”

That night, Neha looked at her old chart and smiled. She understood that big goals are achieved through small steps, taken every day with patience. Months later, she began her new job. On her first day, she wrote a new line in her notebook: “Keep learning. Keep going.”
