Background Studio is a free online tool that removes the background from any photo using an AI model and lets you replace it with a solid colour, gradient, ready-made scene or your own image. You can use it for profile pictures, passport and ID photos, product photos, social media posts, thumbnails and posters. The AI runs inside your browser, so your photo is not uploaded to any server.

How It Works

When you click Remove Background, the tool loads an AI segmentation model in your browser. The model looks at your photo, separates the main subject (person, product, pet or object) from the background, and creates a transparent cutout. This cutout is stored separately, so you can change the background as many times as you like without running the AI again.

Note: The first time you use the AI, the tool downloads the AI library and model files (tens of MB). This can take a short time on a slow connection. After that, processing is faster.

How to Use – Step by Step

1. Upload your photo: Drag and drop or click Upload Image. JPEG, JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 30 MB are supported.
2. Remove the background: Open the Remove BG tool and click Remove Background. Wait for the progress bar to finish.
3. Choose a new background: Open Background or Templates. Pick a solid colour, a gradient, a ready-made scene, a blurred version of your own photo, or upload your own background image.
4. Adjust the subject: In Subject & Crop, move, resize, rotate or flip the subject. You can also drag the subject directly on the canvas. Choose a canvas size such as 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or 9:16.
5. Refine the edges: In Edge Refine, use Feather, Smooth, Expand/Contract and Edge Contrast to clean up the outline. Use the Brush to erase leftover background or restore parts of the subject that were removed by mistake.
6. Add effects (optional): Add a drop shadow, change subject brightness, contrast and saturation, blur the background, or add a vignette.
7. Compare and download: Use the Compare slider to see before and after. Then open Export, set the size and quality, and download Transparent PNG, Final PNG, JPEG or WebP.

• For a transparent result, export Transparent PNG. JPEG does not support transparency, so empty areas are filled with a colour.

Your photos are processed in your browser and are not uploaded by this tool. Only the AI library and model files are downloaded from public servers when you first remove a background. Nothing is saved in your browser storage, and closing the page clears your work.

Very large photos are reduced to a maximum of 2048 pixels on the longest side so the browser can process them smoothly. You can still set a custom export size.

Can I make a passport size photo?

Yes. Open Passport / Product, choose a size, pick a white, light blue or light grey background and click Apply. Passport rules differ by country and application, so always check the official requirements.

Yes. Use Product mode for a white or transparent 2000 × 2000 px image, and use the Size slider to add padding around the product.

Why do blur or brightness effects not work on my device?

Some effects need canvas filter support, which works in Chrome and Edge. Safari may not support them. Use a recent version of Chrome or Edge for best results.

Yes, the layout is responsive. For the best speed, use a recent Chrome browser. The first model download works better on Wi-Fi.
